DIY VR system
General description
I made a VR system which allows me to make 6DOF games and I even made a game for my brother's birthday, which surprisingly worked somewhat well. The system supports streaming, 6DOF movement, direct play on head hardware and much more.
Hardware
Trust me, this is the boring part only. The head chassis was made from LEGO-s and 2 pieces of 20D biconvex glasses. Rubber bandings were used to make the glasses more comfortable and the 20D(iopter) glasses allowed for a focal length of approximately 5 LEGO studs. The system contains 2 phones: The head phone which tracks the head movement and the controller phone which can be used to control the VR hand model. The gyro's acceleration does not get used because of the drifting and the movement is calculated by software.
Software
The software is capable of connecting the streaming device, the VR server, the head and the hand devices. The streaming software runs the game and calculates the movement via rotation heuristics. The VR server communicates with the head, hand and streamer. The VR head device's software also supports direct play. The streaming is done via custom websocket based JPEG streaming.
